Music lovers around the world and the entertainment industry has been thrown into a sad state again as another singer and songwriter has officially been declared dead.

According to Laila’s blog, the Grammy awards singer and songwriter, Dr John aged 77 died after suffering a major heart attack. He was confirmed dead on Thursday according to a message posted on his official Twitter account. The singer was known to thrill fans and show his musical skills as his genre cut across blues, pop, jazz, boogie-woogie and rock and roll. A statement on the death of the New Orleans born musician reads thus:

“towards the break of day June 6, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr, known as Dr John, passed away of a heart attack. The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.”

American musician, Dr John began his musical journey in the late 1950s and later became a pianist on the New Orleans music scene. He then gained recognition as a solo performer with the release of his album Gris-Gris in 1968. Dr John who fought heroin addiction successfully is known for major hits like Gris-Gris in 1968.

His love for music was said to be fostered by his father who ran an appliance store that also sold records. His mother, meanwhile, had worked as a model, and thanks to her connections, Malcolm’s face appeared on boxes of Ivory Soap. He was married twice and told the New York Times he had “a lot” of children.

Meanwhile, in the Nigerian entertainment industry, the music scene has so far managed scale through the era of celebrity deaths though some have lost close friends and family. One of such artists is Adekunle Gold who recently lost his father. In the movie scene, loads of celebrities have departed this world as an alarming number of over 15 Nollywood artists have kicked the bucket since 3rd January 2019. Adding to the fears of many Nigerian fans and others alike, some of these celebrities have fallen ill and their recovery seems to be a far cry from reality.

We hope that the tragedy that has recently befallen the Nigerian entertainment industry comes to an end really soon and the celebrities who have fallen ill gain full and quick recovery.
