Crystal Palace want Manchester United to remove a sell-on fee in Wilfried Zaha’s contract as a sweetener in talks to sign Eagles defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United had an opening bid of around £40m turned down for Wan-Bissaka as Palace value him at closer to £60m.

The Red Devils are expected to return with an improved bid but are unlikely to stretch as far as Palace’s £60m valuation of the 21-year-old.

Manchester City paid £50m for Kyle Walker in 2017, making him the most expensive English defender of all-time.

United are desperate to sign the defender but feel a £60m fee is steep and the Guardian report that Palace are exploring other ways of making the difference up.

One potential way being touted is the suggestion that United could remove a sell-on fee in Zaha’s contract that would give Palace full rights to a future fee if he is sold.

United insisted on a 20% sell-on clause when they allowed Zaha to return to Selhurst Park in 2015 and could pocket as much as £16m if a club meets Palace’s £80m valuation for the winger this summer.

Removing the clause would essentially take Palace to their valuation for Wan-Bissaka and the Eagles would then be more inclined to let the defender move to Old Trafford.

Wan-Bissaka, for his part, has made it clear that he feels the chance to join United is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.

The defender will not hand in a transfer request to leave Selhurst Park but is hopeful that a fee will be agreed in the coming weeks.

Wan-Bissaka is currently on international duty with England’s U21s but he wants his future resolved before he embarks on his summer holidays before returning for pre-season.
