Man united set to reconsider longstaff deal

MANCHESTER UNITED chief Ed Woodward has Sean Longstaff as the sole midfielder on his transfer radar following the club’s decision not to sign Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, reports say.

Manchester United chief Woodward has chosen to walk away from a deal for Eriksen, who Tottenham have been hoping to get off the books.

The Red Devils feel the Denmark international wants to join Real Madrid instead and, consequently, have opted against striking a deal.

Manchester United fans want the club to sign a midfielder, with supporters calling for deals for the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

However, the Daily Star claim Longstaff is the only player left on the Red Devils’ transfer radar.

Earlier in the summer, Newcastle slapped a huge £50million price tag on the 21-year-old.

That was to deter United from making a bid, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer viewing the midfielder as a suitable replacement for the waning Nemanja Matic.

Newcastle have informed United that Longstaff is not for sale.

But the report says United could yet launch a dramatic late bid in an attempt to bring him to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were willing to spend £50m on Eriksen.

And that amount would certainly convince Newcastle into letting Longstaff go, despite having very little time to bring in a replacement.

United’s interest in the Newcastle star was recently questioned by BBC Sport pundit Danny Mills - because of Scott McTominay.

“Why are they interested in Longstaff when they have McTominay? It makes no sense,” he said.

“Surely they would be buying like-for-like. Is Longstaff better than McTominay? I’m not sure he is.

“I don’t see what Longstaff would add to Man United.

“The club’s transfer policy just seems a little bit slapdash. I don’t even understand what their policy is.

“Sure, they’re trying to buy young players with potential.

“But they already have a decent young central midfielder.”

United are understood to have no interest in Fernandes, while Milinkovic-Savic has been a non-starter since the beginning of the window.
