Daniel James has revealed the message he received from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shortly before scoring his debut goal in Manchester United’s win over Chelsea on Sunday.

Two goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial’s close-range strike put United three ahead before James was brought on as a substitute with 16 minutes remaining.

And the Wales international got off to an excellent start as he rounded off United’s victory with a goal in the 81st minute.

Asked what Solskjaer had said to him on the touchline before he was brought on, James told Optus Sport: ‘He just said go out, go and enjoy it, we’re 3-0 up, so just go and do what you’ve been doing in pre-season, work hard and you’ll get your opportunities.’

James also believes United’s display proves how dangerous they are on the counter-attack.

‘I think for a team like Chelsea to come here and for us to do that to them shows other teams what we can do,’ said the winger.

‘We showed that high press today, what we can do, especially on the counter-attack we’re quite lethal.’

James dedicated his goal to his late father who passed away shortly before he completed his move from Swansea City to United.

‘It would’ve been amazing for him to be here today but he’s not,’ James said after the match.

‘To dedicate that goal to him… I scored a winning penalty in Cardiff last week which was obviously amazing.

‘To score here on my debut, you couldn’t write it.’
