Wayne Rooney set to return to English football

Wayne Rooney could make a return to English football, as a player-coach at Championship club Derby County, the Daily Mail reports.

The former Manchester United and England captain, who plays for DC United in Major League Soccer, is reportedly in talks with the Rams.

Preliminary talks have taken place between Derby and Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford, with further discussions planned.

Rooney could become the latest former England stalwart to work for Derby, after Frank Lampard entered management at Pride Park last season, leading them to the Championship play-off final.

Lampard has since left to become Chelsea manager and was replaced by the former Holland international Phillip Cocu on a four-year contract.

Mel Morris, the Derby owner, is now reportedly keen to bring another high profile former England player into the fold as a player-coach.

Rooney is England’s all-time record goalscorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances and is also United’s record scorer with 253 goals in 559 games.
